Calculating

Calculating time from sprints to middle and long distances takes some reckoning mostly
because very few dogs are capable of maintaining the same pace over difffent distances.

While a sprinter will maintain its speed for most of the distance - lots of middle distance dogs start to slow from the 3rd & 4th bends.

Whereas lots of stayers are slower in the 1st half of race and speed up in the 2rd half of race.

My calculations are to give you a rough idea what your dog should do so therefore if your dog does worse than these figures he does'nt stay and you should run it over a shorter distance.

If it does better than these figures that is a sign to try it over a longer distance till you get the right distance for the dog.

Greyhound Stadium Distance Time Per yard yards/second
Sycamore Dan Shelbourne Park 350 18.41 0.052600 19.01
Premier Fantasy Shelbourne Park 525 28.08 0.053486 18.70
Bypass Byway Shelbourne Park 550 29.42 0.053491 18.69
Broadacres Turbo Shelbourne Park 575 30.89 0.053722 18.61
Late Late Show Shelbourne Park 600 32.20 0.053667 18.63
Making Merry Shelbourne Park 750 41.59 0.055453 18.03
Cool Performance Shelbourne Park 350 18.42 0.052629
Shelbourne Park 550 29.52 0.053673
Difference per yard 0.001044
200 yards 0.21
175 yards 0.18
Botherduff Light Shelbourne Park 350 18.45 0.052714
Shelbourne Park 550 29.57 0.053764
Difference per yard 0.001050
200 yards 0.21
175 yards 0.18
So if your dog does 19.09 350 yards 0.054543
You could expect him to do 525 yards 28.64
plus 0.18 28.82
550 yards 30.00
plus 0.21 30.21
Group Leader Track
Record
Holder who is a fast finisher
Latest win time 525 yards 28.65
Per yard 0.054571
Track Record 750 yards 41.51
Per yard 0.055347
Difference per yard is 0.000776
750 minus 525 = 225 yards 0.18

The difference - on the previous evidence there is approx 0.18 seconds for 200 yards.
If we assume that each yard the dog slows is 0.0009 seconds so each 25 yards would be 0.0225 seconds.
You would need to add the following time to the calculated time as such.

A dog doing 29.00 seconds for 525 yards and going up to 600 yards is an additional 75 yards.
29.00 divided by 525 = 0.055238 per yard times 600 = 33.14 plus 0.0225 times 3 = 0.0675 so we add
the 0.0675 to 33.14 = 33.21 seconds is the time the dog would be expected to do for 600 yards.

I hope that you understand these calculations if not e-mail me in the slot below and please include your e-mail address for a answer.

To continue with calculating - Look at the 2rd column to get your dogs
nearest time for 525 yards and then columns 4 for 550 yards - 5 for 575 yards and 6 for 600 yards estimated time for those distances that is if your dog will stay the extra distance. This worked quite well on 04/01/2009 when top dogs ran over 575 yards for example 3 dogs last winning times at Shelbourne over 525 yards were

Kildallon Maid =28.61 nearest to that 28.60 so table time for 575 is 31.32 plus the 0.01=31.33 plus pace drop which on the other chart is 0.03 for each 25 yards making 0.06 - add to 31.33 and you have 31.39 and she did 31.39 so calculation was correct for the estimated time.

Tip and Tin =28.86 nearest time 28.90 = 31.65 minus the 0.04=31.61 plus 0.03 twice = 0.06 giving you 31.67 which was 0.04 out as he did 31.71

Blackstone Gene = 28.53 nearest time = 28.50 = 31.21 at 575 so we have 31.21 plus 0.03 = 31.24 plus 2 at 0.03 = 0.06 giving 31.30 and the dog did 31.27 only 0.03 out.
This table will save you a lot of time working out what your dog should do over the extra distances.
