First for the people new to computers and keyboards we will point out which keys we will be using. Speaking to you in a language that you can understand.
The 1st key is the plus sign + and you will find it above your equal sign and to get it to work you just press and hold down the arrow sign in the bottom left hand corner which is normally called the lift key. then press + sign.
The 2rd key is the multiply key * which is above the number 8 and to get this to work you must also hold down the arrow key in the bottom left hand corner then press the * key.
The 3rd key is the divide / key which is under the question mark but you do not need to hold down the arrow key as it is on the bottom row.
Addition
1/3rd + 2/3rds You can add the same fractions but to add 1/5th + 2/3rd you would have to find the common factor. Its the number that both bottom numbers can divide into.
In this case it is 15 so you need to change the 1/5th to 3/15ths then add 2/3rds which is 10/15ths which total is 13/15ths.
2/3rds + 1/6th + 1/12th = 8/12ths + 2/12ths + 1/12 = Answer 11/12ths
Subtraction of Fractions.
5/8ths minus 3/8ths = 2/8ths cancelled down by 2 = 1/4 but as in the case of addition when you get different fractions you need to find the common factor.
7/8ths minus 1/4qtr minus 1/8th = common factor is 8 so you need to change 1/4qtr to 2/8ths then take away = 7 minus 2 = 5 minus 1= 4 so your answer is 4/8ths cancelled down when divded by 4 = 1/2
If you have full numbers plus fractions = 17 and 1/2 minus 8 and 1/4qtr minus 2 and 1/8th you find the common factor which is 8 and multiply 17 by 8 = 136 + 4 = 140 then multiply 8 by 8 = 64 + 2 = 66 then 2 by 8 + 1 = 17
so now we have 140 minus 66 minus 17 = 140 minus 66 = 74 minus 17 = 57 over 8 which is equal to 7 and 1/8th which is the answer.
Dividing Fractions.
Dividing fractions is another matter and this is where most of the students get wrong answers.
If you have 1/3rd divided by 3/4qtr then you have to change the divide sign to multiply and reverse the second fraction, like this multiply 1/3rd by 4/3rds so then you would have 1 times 4 on top line and 3 times 3 on the bottom line giving you a answer of 4 over 9.
If you practice often there is less likely that you will forget but if you leave maths alone next time you will have forgotten what you have learnt today. Keep at it.
For those who find it hard to add up numbers like nines.
£2.99 add £3.99 add £4.99 you may find it easier it do it this way. Add 1 penny to each item.
£2.99 + 0.01 = £3.00
£3.99 + 0.01 = £4.00
£4.99 + 0.01 = £5.00
That equals £12.00 then just take the 0.03 pence away and your answer should be £11.97
Decimals - Perhaps the most easy to do for some as multiply by 10 - 100 - 1000 is just moving a decimal point. If we have numbers 123456 then put a decimal point in the middle you have 123.456 to multiply by 10 you simply move the decimal point one place to the right =1234.56 - To multiply by 100 you move two places to the right =12345.6 and to multiply by a thousand you move three places to the right =123456
With division you simply move one place to the left 123.456 divided by 10 is 12.3456 -divided by 100 is
1.23456 and divided by a thousand you have 0.123456
Adding Decimals - Most important part of adding decimals is to get your decimal points lined up correctly.
If we use the same decimals as our multiply you should line up like this. Where there is no number put a nought in.
000123.456
001234.560
012345.600
123456.000
137159.616 - Total
